The term “Old Glory” was coined by American sea captain William Driver, who was presented by friends with a ceremonial American flag as he began one of his many voyages. When the flag was run up, Captain Driver exclaimed, “Old Glory!” and the name stuck. Years later during the American Civil War, Captain Driver raised the original Old Glory banner from the Tennessee state capitol building in Nashville when the city was recaptured by Union troops. Captain Driver’s grave, in Nashville, is one of only three places in the United States where Old Glory is authorized by act of Congress to be flown 24 hours a day.
